Add as a preferred sourceMorris County will hold an online community meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2026, to share early design plans for replacing the East Main Street bridge over the Rockaway River in Rockaway Borough.
The Community Stakeholders Meeting runs from 2 to 4 p.m. on Microsoft Teams and may end earlier depending on questions. The bridge carries East Main Street, which is County Route 644, and is listed by the county as Structure No. 1400-976.
What the Meeting Covers
According to a county invitation letter posted by Rockaway Borough, the project team will introduce itself, give a status update and schedule, present preliminary design plans for the replacement and collect feedback from the community. The county is working with the New Jersey Department of Transportation and the North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority.
The county says the new bridge is meant to address structural, geometric and operational deficiencies and provide a safe crossing for all modes of travel.
How to Join
Attendees must RSVP to receive the meeting link. Send your name and email address to eastmainstreetbridge@gmail.com, or call Martine Culbertson, community involvement facilitator, at 856-795-8485. Project questions can also go to Morris County senior engineer Danielle Malavarca at 973-829-8622.
Invitations went to property owners near the project site and other likely stakeholders. Residents who cannot attend will have another chance, since the county plans an online Public Information Center meeting later, which the project schedule lists for winter 2027.
Project Timeline
A concept study was completed in 2022 with federal funding. The current preliminary engineering phase began in late 2025 and is expected to run through spring 2027, followed by final design, tentatively from fall 2027 to fall 2029. The county says construction is not expected to start for several years, with timing depending in part on federal funding.
