Add as a preferred sourceROCKAWAY TOWNSHIP, NJ – Private well testing for PFAS in the Lake Telemark area of Rockaway Township will continue through December 2026, the Township said, citing guidance from the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection.
The NJDEP advised that sampling of private wells for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, also known as PFAS, remains underway through the end of the year. PFAS are manmade chemicals used for years in products such as stain-resistant coatings, water-resistant clothing, greaseproof food packaging, waterproof cosmetics, and certain firefighting foams.
According to Rockaway Township, PFAS persist in the environment and have been found in public water systems and private wells across the country. The NJDEP began a targeted PFAS investigation in Rockaway Township in 2019 and is expanding that work to private wells near affected wells in Morris County.
Residents whose wells are included in the NJDEP sampling plan will receive correspondence directly from agency representatives. Questions about the program or PFAS in private wells can go to Gregory Broslawski, Community Relations Coordinator for the NJDEP, at 609-940-4775 or gregory.broslawski@dep.nj.gov.
