Copeland Middle School has released its Summer Reading 2026 Project Choice Board, laying out what Rockaway Township students entering grades six through eight need to read and complete before the new school year. The Rockaway Township School District in Morris County posted the assignment on June 9, 2026.

Students start by reading an age-appropriate novel of their choice. They can pick from the school’s suggested titles or borrow a book through the CMS Online Library. After finishing the novel, each student chooses one project based on the grade they will be entering in the 2026-27 school year.

Every project ties back to one of five literary elements: conflict, setting, characterization, theme, or point of view. Incoming sixth graders can draw a six-frame cartoon, interview their main character, or build a movie soundtrack. Incoming seventh graders can film a 45-second commercial for a setting in their novel or write a newspaper-style article about its central conflict. Incoming eighth graders can design a travel brochure, create a comic strip, or turn the novel’s theme into a children’s book.

Completed projects are due on the first day of school and can be submitted digitally or as a hard copy.

The school is also hosting two optional help sessions over the summer. Bagels and Books runs July 15 from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., and Pizza and Books follows on August 12 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.

One rule appears in bold at the top of the board: any use of AI is strictly prohibited and will result in a zero for the assignment.

The full choice board is available from the Rockaway Township School District.
