Families in Rockaway Borough and Rockaway Township looking for extra academic help this school year have an option that does not require a drive. The Tutor Shack, a New Jersey tutoring company owned by Steph Legnosky, offers virtual one-on-one sessions that students can join from home.
According to the company’s website, its virtual tutoring platform provides the same personalized attention and support as an in-person session. That flexibility can help students with busy schedules fit tutoring around classes, sports and activities.
What Students Can Get Help With
The Tutor Shack works with students from elementary school through college. Services listed on its site include:
- SAT and ACT prep
- Coursework and homework help
- Study, organization and time management skills
- AP course and exam preparation
- Entrance exam preparation
- College application essays and personal statements
Its study skills tutoring covers English, social studies, math, science and foreign languages, with work on note taking, active reading, critical thinking, goal setting and stress management.
Signs a Student May Need Support
Legnosky, a parent and education advocate, has written that today’s students carry both academic and emotional pressure, from daily coursework and SAT and ACT prep to big questions about their future.
In her view, the warning signs are often familiar to parents: slipping grades, frustration over homework, or a child who simply says, “I don’t get it.” That is the point, she wrote, when one-on-one tutoring can supply the individual attention that is often missing in even the best classrooms.
More Than Grades
“Tutoring is not a quick fix,” Legnosky wrote. “It’s a foundation for lifelong learning.”
She points to skills that last beyond the report card, including problem solving and time management. A student who gains ground in math may start to see the link to real-world analytics, while stronger writing can carry over to college essays, internships and professional communication.
Legnosky also describes good tutors as mentors who listen, adapt to each student and know when to ease up and when to push. Over time, she wrote, that connection helps students rediscover confidence and motivation.
A Benefit for the Whole Community
Legnosky argues the payoff reaches beyond one household. Stronger learners, she wrote, grow into innovative thinkers, entrepreneurs and community members who help shape their local economy.
Her advice to parents is to look for a tutor who can support a student’s unique needs and focus on individual strengths and weaknesses, and to ask one question: “How does tutoring go beyond grades and prepare my child for life?”
