A volunteer department with deep roots

The department’s own history goes back well over a century. Its timeline lists Chief John Riggott in 1894 and a 1907 blaze that destroyed the Rockaway Rolling Mill and put about 300 men out of work. Members still serve as volunteers today, answering calls around the clock alongside their regular jobs.

  • Training is free. New members complete Firefighter I and CPR or First Responder training through the department and the Morris County Fire and Police Academy.
  • Benefits include uniforms, ongoing training and New Jersey’s Length of Service Award Program (LOSAP), a retirement benefit for volunteers.
  • Juniors ages 16 to 18 can join with written permission from a parent or guardian and must keep at least a C average in school.
  • Stop by the firehouse on Sunday mornings from 9 a.m. to noon to talk with an officer or member.

The Rockaway Borough Fire Department Family Festival

Every summer the department hosts its Family Festival at Fireman’s Field on Beach Street, with live music, food and fireworks. Proceeds support the volunteers. Read our story on the 2026 Family Festival, and see our Rockaway Borough local guide for more on town services.
