Add as a preferred sourceMorris County will hold a public tree-planting ceremony Thursday, September 17, 2026, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at Central Park of Morris County in Parsippany-Troy Hills.
The Morris County Park Commission and the New Jersey Arborists Chapter of the International Society of Arboriculture are hosting the event. Rockaway residents and other members of the public are invited.
The ceremony will add 13 trees, with one representing each of the original 13 colonies, as part of the county’s recognition of the nation’s 250th anniversary. The species were selected to represent the colonies while remaining suited to northern New Jersey’s climate.
A time capsule will be installed with the grove and is scheduled to be opened in 2076. Morris County says it will include a letter documenting the health of New Jersey forests in 2026, how the trees were selected, tree-care practices and a message for future residents.
The event coincides with Constitution Day, which marks the signing of the U.S. Constitution in 1787. The planting will take place rain or shine. Attendees should dress for outdoor field conditions.
The county’s announcement does not list an admission fee or advance registration requirement.
