Beach Street in Rockaway Borough will close to through traffic on or about Thursday, August 13, 2026, as Morris County begins a rehabilitation of the Beach Street Bridge over the Rockaway River.
Crews will work from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. on regular business days, Monday through Friday. Morris County expects the project to take about three months to finish, weather permitting.
While the bridge is closed, drivers will follow a signed detour of about 1.75 miles using East Main Street, Jackson Avenue, Union Street and Stickle Avenue. Motorists are advised to drive with caution, expect delays and plan alternate routes.
The existing bridge is a single-span steel girder structure built in 1970. The county says it remains structurally sound, but its concrete driving surface has worn down over the years. Repeated patching has not stopped recurring potholes, so a full deck replacement was chosen as the most practical and cost-effective way to extend the bridge’s service life. As part of the work, crews will also sandblast and repaint the bridge’s structural steel girders to protect it for decades to come.
The $1,268,008 project is being completed by Colonnelli Brothers Inc. of Hackensack, New Jersey, under contract with Morris County. Rockaway Borough residents who rely on Beach Street should plan the detour into their daily routines once the closure begins.
