ROCKAWAY BOROUGH, NJ — Rockaway Borough is a vibrant community in the northern part of Morris County with deep historical roots and a strong sense of local pride. Officially formed on July 17, 1894, the borough was created when it split from the larger Rockaway Township, though its story reaches back much further.

The first settlers arrived in the area in the 1720s. By the mid 1700s, Rockaway Village had already developed into a center for trade, manufacturing, and community life. Early industries included gristmills, sawmills, and iron forges along the Rockaway River, helping establish the village as an important hub of commerce long before it became an independent borough.

The borough’s growth accelerated in the 19th century with the completion of the Morris Canal in 1836. The canal connected local businesses to larger regional trade routes, fueling economic development and strengthening Rockaway’s position within Morris County. Over time, the community evolved into a place where industry, commerce, and culture worked side by side.

Today, Rockaway Borough spans just over two square miles and is home to approximately 6,800 residents. The town blends historic charm with modern amenities, and many homes still reflect architectural styles from the 1800s, preserving its distinctive character.

Residents and visitors enjoy local parks, walking trails along the scenic Rockaway River, and a downtown district filled with shops, restaurants, and services. Community involvement remains strong, with clubs, athletic teams, and civic groups supporting recreation and local events throughout the year.
