Rockaway Township has moved the start time of its 9/11 Memorial Ceremony to 5:00 PM, according to an updated notice from the township. The ceremony was previously set for 7:00 PM.

The event takes place on Friday, September 11, 2026, at the Park Lake Gazebo in Rockaway Township, and marks the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks.

The ceremony will center on a candlelight vigil and a reading of names. Organizers will honor the memory of the Morris County residents who lost their lives in 2001 by reading each of their names aloud. The event is free, and all residents are welcome to attend in commemoration and solemn remembrance.

This year carries added weight for the community. A quarter century has passed since the September 11, 2001, attacks, which claimed nearly 3,000 lives in New York, at the Pentagon, and near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. New Jersey lost hundreds of residents that day, and local ceremonies like this one keep their memory alive for a new generation.

Residents who had planned around the earlier 7:00 PM start should note the new 5:00 PM time. The Park Lake Gazebo offers a quiet lakeside setting for the vigil, and families across Rockaway and the surrounding Morris County towns are encouraged to arrive a few minutes early.
