Add as a preferred sourceOutfront Media has withdrawn its plan to build an electronic billboard roughly 90 feet tall along Route 80 in neighboring Denville, ending a fight that drew more than a year of pushback from residents.
Denville Township Administrator Steven Ward said the application was pulled on Oct. 1. On Friday, Oct. 2, the township announced that the hearing scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2026 was canceled because Outfront had withdrawn its application in its entirety.
The sign was proposed for Fireman’s Field on Indian Road, on property owned by the Denville Fire Department Association. It would have faced eastbound drivers on an elevated stretch of Route 80, the same stretch many Rockaway Borough and Rockaway Township commuters drive every day on their way toward Parsippany and points east.
Billboards are not permitted in that zoning district, so Outfront needed a use variance from the Denville Zoning Board of Adjustment, along with relief for the sign’s height, size and changing electronic messages. Residents of the Indian Lake neighborhood packed hearings and questioned how much of the sign and its light would be visible from their homes.
Outfront Media declined to comment on the withdrawal and has not said why it dropped the plan.
Agendas and minutes for the case are posted on the Denville Zoning Board of Adjustment page.
