Add as a preferred sourceRockaway Borough has adopted a $1,584,000 bond ordinance to pay for road work, new Department of Public Works trucks, police vehicles, and upgrades to the Borough’s hockey rink.
The Mayor and Council adopted Ordinance 26-19 on second reading at their Thursday, Sept. 24, 2026, meeting after introducing it Sept. 10. The ordinance authorizes up to $1,160,034 in bonds or notes to finance part of the cost.
The largest item is $510,000 for trucks and a loader for the Department of Public Works. The ordinance also sets aside $300,000 for road resurfacing throughout the Borough and $349,000 for a road reconstruction project on White Meadow Avenue, Adler Court, and Seminole Avenue. That project includes a $202,166 grant from the New Jersey Department of Transportation.
Other items include $150,000 for Phase I of the Jackson Avenue riverbank project, paid from the Capital Improvement Fund with no borrowing. The list also covers $125,000 for renovations and upgrades at the hockey rink, $90,000 for police vehicles, and $60,000 to replace lights for streets and parks.
Down payments of $71,800 come from earlier Borough budgets. The Borough lists the average useful life of the improvements at 8.05 years. The adoption notice was first posted Sept. 25, and under the Local Bond Law the ordinance takes effect 20 days after its first publication.
The same night, the Mayor and Council also adopted Ordinance 26-20, a $721,250 water utility bond for well rehabilitation and water main work that Rockaway News reported on in September. They also adopted Ordinance 26-18, which updates the Borough’s nuisance noise rules. Sound from a radio, TV, instrument, or speaker that is plainly audible 100 feet away is evidence of a violation from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. Monday through Saturday, and from 9 p.m. to 8 a.m. on Sunday.
Copies of the full bond ordinance are available at no cost from the Borough Clerk’s office during regular business hours. The next Mayor and Council meeting is Thursday, Oct. 8, 2026, at 6:30 p.m.
