The Rockaway Borough Mayor and Council introduced Ordinance 26-17 on August 13, 2026, a zoning measure clarifying that the Borough’s land use code does not treat data centers as a permitted “data processing and storage facility.” The ordinance passed on first reading by title only at a regular meeting held at the Community Center, 21-25 Union Street in Rockaway, New Jersey.
Ordinance 26-17 amends two parts of the Borough Code: Chapter 169, Land Use Administration and Procedures, and Chapter 172, Zoning. According to the public notice, the change clarifies that the meaning of “data processing and storage facilities” does not include data centers. The update gives the Borough clearer language on how data centers fit, or do not fit, within its existing zoning categories.
The Borough Council will consider the ordinance for final passage at its next regular meeting on September 10, 2026, at 6:30 p.m. at the Community Center, 21-25 Union Street. All residents who wish to comment will be given an opportunity to be heard before any vote.

The September 10 session is the Morris County borough’s next regular Council meeting after the previously scheduled August 27 meeting was canceled.
